NHTSA's official decode agrees

The U.S. government's own decoder, NHTSA's vPIC, confirms Make (the carmaker), Model (Model Y), Model Year (2024), Plant (Fremont, California, USA) and drive configuration (Dual Motor): a match on every field it covers, with a passing check digit.

One gap: NHTSA's database doesn't carry battery pack size or the Long Range trim. Those come from the window sticker and the carmaker account.

HW3 vs. HW4: which one this car has

Fremont's Model Y line switched from Autopilot HW3 to HW4 hardware around a serial-number window in 2023. This car is a full model year (2024) past that transition and doesn't fall inside the ambiguous window at all: this is HW4, high confidence, no serial-number lookup required.

This car's own screen puts it to rest. Under Software → Additional Vehicle Information, it reads "AI Computer: Full Self-Driving Computer 4." Straight from the car, no VIN math required. Even the car's own nickname in the car's app matches this page's name.

Inside

Wraps

Six liveries built on the carmaker's official Model Y wrap template from its public custom-wraps repository. Each one is a real Paint Shop file: under 1 MB, correctly named, and it loads into the car through Toybox after a USB or mobile app upload.

This car wears Bars.

Footnote: the best selling car claim

Where and when this car's design was built

  • Fremont, CA (this car's plant): production began January 2020; first deliveries March 13, 2020.
  • Shanghai: production began December 2020.
  • Austin, TX: trial production late 2021; official "Cyber Rodeo" opening April 7, 2022.
  • Fremont built this same body style from January 2020 until the redesigned "Juniper" version arrived in early 2025. This 2024 car comes from near the very end of that five-year run.
  • The carmaker passed 4 million cumulative global Model Y deliveries around March 2026, making it the best-selling EV nameplate in history, independent of any "best overall vehicle" argument.

Was it really the best-selling car in the world?

In 2023, yes, cleanly. JATO Dynamics, an independent auto-data firm, confirmed Model Y as the best-selling vehicle of any kind globally that year: 1.22 million units, ahead of the Toyota RAV4 and Corolla, the first time a pure EV had ever topped that list.

2024 is genuinely disputed, not a clean repeat. JATO's own 2024 count has the Toyota RAV4 narrowly ahead: 1,187,000 to Model Y's 1,185,000, a margin under 3,000 units. A different tracker, Focus2Move, counted Model Y still on top that year. The carmaker's own claim of "three years running" (2023–2025) stitches together three different data vendors, one per year. Treat that framing as marketing, not an independently confirmed streak. What's not in dispute: Model Y has been the best-selling EV globally every year since 2023, no asterisk needed.

Awards this exact model year earned

  • IIHS Top Safety Pick+ for 2024, under IIHS's tougher, updated 2023+ criteria that a number of other vehicles failed to meet that cycle. Model Y has now earned this award four years running (2021–2024).
  • Consumer Reports 2024 Top Pick, EV category: the only pure battery-EV on CR's overall Top Picks list that year. Worth noting: CR has historically been one of the tougher graders of the carmaker build quality, so this wasn't a rubber stamp.
