A live, working case study · Day 58, and still running

What would happen if one Model Y were measured in public, every mile?

One car, from the day it was bought to today: the switch from gas, charging with no charger at home, the delivery shifts, what a mile costs and the company built in the hours between. 25 steps in 8 chapters.

The question

Why a software studio put one car, one driver and every mile on a public record.

Step 1 · The reason

Nights and weekends, or the other way

One way to build a business is nights and weekends around a job. The builder chose the other way: delivery blocks on a flexible schedule, then software, events and clients in the hours between, with the car and its numbers on a public record.

Step 2 · The driver

Every dollar has to justify itself

Four gas vehicles came before this one in about a year, each bought for a job and sold when the job or the math changed.

Step 3 · The income

One car, three income tracks

The tracks are ranked, not listed. Software is the lead. Sourcing and the audience come second. Delivery is the bridge.

  • Paddock20: software
  • PaddockGavin: vehicle sourcing, events and an owner audience
  • Delivery: Uber Eats and Instacart

The switch

From gas to electric, with no charger at home.

Step 4 · New to EVs

Gas to electric, chapter by chapter

The first switch from gas to electric, in the order it happened: the decision, the first week, living electric, the ledger and the battery.

New to EVs? Five words, in plain terms
kWh
A kilowatt-hour is how electricity is sold, the way gas is sold by the gallon. This car uses about 0.29 of one a mile.
Cost per mile
What charging cost, divided by the miles driven: 12.1¢ here, against 28.0¢ for the gas van it replaced.
Supercharger
A public fast charger. Most of this car's charging came from them, because there is no charger at home.
Charge loss
Some of the energy a charger bills never reaches the battery. Here that is 7.12%.
FSD (Supervised)
The carmaker's driver assistance: the car steers, brakes and accelerates, and the driver supervises every mile. 95.3% of this car's miles used it.

Step 5 · August 22, 2026

A used 2024 Model Y

24,260miles on the odometer, October 20measured

Long Range AWD, built January 2024. The record starts with its first logged drive, August 25.

No charger at home

Every kilowatt-hour bought at a public charger.

The miles

Where the miles went, and how much of the driving FSD (Supervised) did.

Step 12 · September 4 and 5

A long trip, no charger at home

To Birmingham, AL and back: 453.3 miles, 15 drives and 4 charges, all at public chargers.

The shifts

What the delivery work asks of the car, and what it pays.

Grocery orders staged in cratesOne day

Step 14 · September 6

One delivery day, mile for mile

5h19mdoor to doormeasured

An Instacart day the shopper app and the car both measured, start to finish.

  • 3 batches, 4 orders, 89 items
  • 0.4 miles it did not need to drive
  • 1 charge stop on the way

What it costs

What a mile costs, and how to price it at another rate.

Step 18 · Any rate

The same miles at any rate

A calculator prices this car's measured 293.2 Wh a mile at any electricity rate and sets it against a gas car's mpg.

The company

The work done in the hours between the shifts.

Step 21 · Paid partnership

Clean between washes, EV or gas

ALL JACK, WillerTime’s waterless car detail spray, cleans and shines in one step on clear-coat paint, wheels, trim and tires, WillerTime says, and all six of its ingredients are printed on the label. PaddockGavin has a paid partnership with WillerTime.

Step 23 · Another case

SupercarIQ, read back from its own records

An app that names a car and prices it from auction results: what its nightly sweep found, what is in its store and who asked it.

Where it stands

Still running. The latest week, and how to read every figure.

The Model Y's scan screenThe key

Step 25 · How to read it

Every figure says where it comes from

The mark beside a figure says how it is known. The Legend defines every name, mark and equation; Sources says where each figure comes from.

  • measured from the car, a document or an app's screen
  • modeled worked out from measured figures
  • stated the owner's word
